DAMP · MOULD · BUBBLING PAINT

If the stain keeps coming back, the problem isn't the paint.

Painting over a damp stain brings it back in a few months. We find where the moisture comes from first, then fix it with the right primer and paint system.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Anti-damp paint works, but not on its own.

Anti-damp and anti-mould systems slow re-staining once the source is fixed. If the source is still there — a leaking pipe, constant condensation on a north wall — no paint holds the stain back for long.

DIAGNOSIS

Three kinds of damp, three different fixes.

Before any paint, we work out which kind it is — because a fix for condensation won't stop a leak, and neither will stop rising damp.

  • Condensation: black spotting in winter on north walls, corners and around windows. Linked to ventilation and cold surfaces.
  • A leak: a defined, yellowing stain on a ceiling or wall. From plumbing, roof or facade, and it gets repaired first.
  • Rising damp: bubbling paint and salt bloom low on walls in ground floors and basements. A damp-proofing issue.

THE ORDER OF WORK

Source, drying, primer, finish.

If it's a leak, that gets fixed first — otherwise the stain returns. The mouldy, flaking surface is scraped, cleaned and left to dry; then a damp- and mould-blocking primer goes on, and an anti-mould finish coat on top.

With condensation mould, paint is half the job: airing the room regularly and keeping furniture a few centimetres off outside walls goes a long way to stopping it returning.

PROCESS

Four steps. None of them skipped.

  1. Find the source

Plumbing, roof, facade or condensation — we establish which.

  2. Repair first

If it's a leak, we fix it before painting.

  3. The right system

Clean and dry, then blocking primer and an anti-mould finish.

  4. A lasting finish

A clean, smooth wall plus ventilation advice so it stays that way.

QUESTIONS

About damp & mould

I had it painted before and the stain came back — why?

Usually because the real source was never fixed — it was just painted over. Our first step is always the source, not the visible stain.

Is anti-damp paint enough on its own?

No. Once the source is fixed it slows re-staining, but it can't stop an active leak or constant condensation.

Is mould a health concern — is it urgent?

Prolonged damp and mould can irritate the airways. If the source is clear we schedule quickly; if not, we suggest a visit to diagnose it first. For health questions, ask your doctor.

Do you repaint just the stain, or the whole room?

Once the source is fixed, often just the affected area. For colour and texture match we may suggest the whole wall.
