Re-tiling is the most visible bathroom job, and the one most often done wrong. We strip the old finish, check what's underneath and renew the waterproofing in the wet zone.

THE SHORT ANSWER
The price is set less by the tiles than by what's under them.
Re-tiling cost depends on the area, the tile format and pattern, how thick the old finish is, and the state of the surface underneath. In the wet zone, once the tiles come off the waterproofing should be renewed too — check the quote says so.
OVER THE TOP, OR STRIP BACK
We don't tile over old tiles.
It's technically possible, but we don't recommend it: you can't see the existing waterproofing, the floor level rises, and door and drain levels go wrong. Stripping back, levelling and renewing the waterproofing is cheaper in the long run.
WHILE THE WALLS ARE OPEN
With the tiles off, it's the moment to check the pipes.
Once the tiles are off, the pipes in the walls and floor are exposed. If there are old galvanised lines or doubtful joints, this is the cheapest moment to renew them; after tiling, the same job means breaking in again.
GROUT AND PAINT
You don't always need new tiles.
If the tiles are sound but the grout is dark or cracked, re-grouting refreshes a bathroom quickly. Tile paint can be a stop-gap on walls that rarely get wet, but it doesn't last where water hits constantly, such as inside a shower.

How much does bathroom re-tiling cost?

Can new tiles go over old ones?
Possible, but we don't recommend it: you can't see the waterproofing and the floor rises. The right way is to strip back and renew the waterproofing.
Can bathroom tiles be painted?
With the right primer and paint it can be a stop-gap on walls, but not where water hits constantly, such as inside a shower. Send a photo and we'll tell you whether paint or new tiles makes sense.
Is re-grouting enough?
If the tiles are sound and nothing leaks beneath them, often yes. If water gets through cracked grout or tiles sound hollow, re-grouting alone won't fix it.
How long does tiling take?
For a re-tile, strip-out, membrane curing and laying take a few days; we give the exact time in writing based on the area and scope.
