Kitchen Islands: Pros, Cons & the Right Size
Will an island transform your kitchen or cramp it? What to know before you decide.
2026-06-17 · 6 min read
A kitchen island adds workspace and a social hub — but only with enough clearance. A wrongly-sized island makes a kitchen unusable.
How much space does an island need?
Leave at least 90–100 cm of clearance on every side of an island, and 120 cm where drawers or an oven open. If you can't, a peninsula is the better choice.
What to build into an island?
- •Extra counter + storage (most common)
- •Sink or hob (needs plumbing/ventilation)
- •Breakfast bar / seating
Frequently Asked Questions
- Can a small kitchen fit an island?
- Usually not; without 90 cm clearance, a peninsula or a movable cart makes more sense.
